Manhattan Wildscraper
Non-Architecture challenged us to design a “Green/Wild” Skyscraper in Manhattan. One that integrates wild nature into the city - but at the same time operates as a functional hub that responds to the various needs of citizens of upper Manhattan. Our response is 'The Cage'.
“The Cage” is a unique skyscraper located in Manhattan, designed as a sanctuary for the city’s birds. It is an oasis in the heart of the urban jungle, providing a safe space for millions of birds migrating through the Atlantic Flyway.
The building features a vertical forest facade that faces and merges into Central Park - providing an ideal habitat for birds. The open frame design allows for the free movement of birds in and out of the vertical forest. A central park ramp connects the park to the building, and a boardwalk provides access to the different levels of the forest. The building also features a waterfall that serves as both a source of attraction for migratory birds and a cooling system for the building.
The open-air design, coupled with the proximity to nature, makes the floors of the Cage ideal for yoga studios, nature research labs, art and exhibition spaces, and cabin-style apartments. An open-air lobby serves as a platform to gaze into the forest of birds. The Cage is a unique and innovative building that brings the beauty of nature to the heart of the city.
